Serene Lakes Family Cabin

Ski, swim, hike, unwind in the hot tub

Four seasons of family adventure from Serene Lakes

Donner Summit is a wonderfully easy place to build an active family trip. From Serene Lakes, you can walk to the neighborhood lakes and nearby trails, reach Royal Gorge and Sugar Bowl in minutes, and get to Truckee and Donner Lake in about 15 minutes. Winter brings downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, tubing, and snow play; summer is for paddling, swimming, hiking, and mountain biking.

Winter: ski, sled, and play in the snow

There are many ski and snow experiences close to the cabin, so this area is great for families with different ages or ability levels.

Sugar Bowl Resort is our closest major downhill ski area, with terrain from beginner areas through advanced skiing. Sugar Bowl offers skiing across four peaks and 1,650 acres.

Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort surrounds Serene Lakes and is just blocks from the cabin. Its extensive trail system is one of the biggest in North America!

Soda Springs Mountain Resort is great for families with younger children or beginners, with skiing and dedicated snow-play attractions including Planet Kids and Tube Town.

Donner Ski Ranch is another nearby downhill option with beginner terrain, lessons, tubing, and a more old-school independent ski-area feel.

Also nearby: Donner Summit Sno-park for back-country trails and sledding, Kingvale Resort for tubing, sledding, and snowmobile tours, and the neighborhood sledding hill just one block away!

Before driving in winter: conditions can change quickly on Donner Summit. Caltrans QuickMap shows current road conditions and active chain controls.

Summer: swim, paddle, hike, and bike

The two Serene Lakes are within walking distance of the cabin. Lake Dulzura is the recreational lake for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing. The cabin is about one mile from the community beach. Lake Serene, just blocks from the cabin, is open to paddling but not swimming because it serves as the community water supply.

After the snow melts, the Royal Gorge trail network becomes a large playground for hiking and mountain biking, while nearby sections of the Pacific Crest Trail offer wildflowers, granite, and Sierra ridgeline views.

For a bigger lake day, Donner Lake is about 15 minutes away and offers swimming, boating, beaches, and Donner Memorial State Park.

Family hikes we like

Here are a few hikes near the cabin. We have a more complete guide and some trail maps in the cabin.

Donner Summit Lakes to Azalea & Flora — about 2.7 miles round trip
A shorter outing near the PCT with alpine lakes, picnic opportunities, and views toward Donner Lake. The lakes are great for swimming!

A short trail to a clear alpine lake below Devil’s Peak with great swimming.

Judah Loop — about 4.4 miles round trip
One of the classic Donner Summit hikes, with Sierra views and excellent early-summer wildflowers. Serene_Summit_House_Guest_Guide
